Every year, smoke alarms save thousands of lives by providing early warning in the event of a fire. Their effectiveness is well established: detecting smoke in its early stages gives occupants valuable time to react, evacuate, and call emergency services.

Despite this, the adoption of residential smoke alarms remains uneven across Europe. Requirements differ from one country to another and, in some cases, even between regions, as in Germany, where legislation is defined at the federal state (Länder) level. While regulations vary, one principle remains universal: a smoke alarm can only protect lives if it is correctly installed, properly maintained, and fully operational.
